Use this tool to help avoid having address harvesting bots find your email address on web sites where you have access to the HTML code.

Address harvesting bots are similar to search engines in that they crawl the web looking for things that match their criteria. In the case of address harvesting bots the criteria are generally things that will make a bit of text look like an email address (such as '@' and '.') Highly advanced bots might also look for things like 'at' or 'dot' as well as long strings of html entities.

Automated harvesting of openly exposed email addresses is widely regarded as the leading spam generating vulnerability today. Such exposed addresses are very easy to collect and are practically guaranteed to be valid and working addresses. Furthermore, they are easily sorted by industry classification for sales within targeted email marketing lists.

To help combat this problem and enable Webmasters to easily close this widely-exploited vulnerability, the OnlyMyEmail Mailto Encoder will generate JavaScript code that can be used to replace email addresses and the 'mailto:' links that contain them. JavaScript enabled browsers will render the address so that anyone looking at your site will see a normal text address or 'mailto:' link but address harvesting bots will not.

  • If the only field entered is 'Email Address' the resulting JavaScript code will produce a plain text email address (i.e. no link).
  • The 'Link Text' field will be the text displayed by the link. Note: This can also contain an HTML image tag if you want the link to be an image.
  • The 'Subject' field will automatically fill in the subject on the user's email client when the link is clicked.
  • The 'CSS Style for Link' field should contain only the value of the style tag for the link. For example to make the text bold and red you would use 'font-weight:bold;color:#f00;'. If you are not familiar with CSS don't use this field. Note: Do not use this if 'Link Text' is an HTML image tag.

Javascript code will be generated below when the form is submitted. Cut and paste the code exactly as it appears and use it to replace email addresses or 'mailto:' links in your web page.
